Accuracy and Limitations

DrinkWaterUSA tools are designed for general information and everyday calculations. A result can be mathematically consistent with its inputs and still be a poor fit for a particular person or situation.

Estimate is not a personal prescription

The main water calculator uses 30–40 mL/kg/day as a rough heuristic for generally healthy adults. This range has not been clinically validated by DrinkWaterUSA. It is not an official formula from the National Academies or CDC, and it does not determine how much plain water a person should drink.

Inputs and real-world uncertainty

Calculator results depend on accurate inputs, selected units, and the assumptions shown on each page. Weight alone does not reflect age, food and beverage intake, climate, activity, illness, medication, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other personal circumstances. A bottle capacity may differ from the amount actually poured. A sweat-rate estimate can be affected by scale accuracy, clothing, missed drinks, and measurement timing.

Population references are different

National Academies Adequate Intake values describe total water from food and beverages for population groups. They are not individualized requirements, and they are not the formula used by the site’s weight calculator. See the source list and method details.

When to seek individual guidance

Do not use a general calculator to manage a medical fluid restriction or to decide care for an illness. Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, older adults, and people with kidney, heart, or other medical conditions may need individualized advice. Ask a qualified health professional who knows your situation.

Our accuracy commitment

We aim to show units, formulas, assumptions, and relevant limitations; link evidence to the claims it supports; and correct material errors when identified. We cannot guarantee that every source or tool is error-free or suited to every use. Please send us a correction if you find a problem.
