A reference value for lactation

The National Academies lists an Adequate Intake of 3.8 L/day of total water during lactation for adult women, including water from food and beverages; about 3.1 L is estimated from beverages. This is a population reference, not a requirement to drink that exact amount as plain water. See the lactation table and its basis.

Respond to thirst and routine

Keep a drink accessible if that helps during feeding sessions, and drink to satisfy thirst unless a clinician has given different instructions. Needs vary with climate, activity, diet, illness, and health. Adding a large fixed amount to a nonpregnant adult estimate is not justified for everyone.

Water does not replace feeding support

If you are concerned about milk supply, feeding, or a baby’s weight gain, contact a pediatric clinician or lactation professional. Drinking beyond thirst is not a substitute for evaluating feeding concerns. The site’s general adult calculator is not individualized for lactation.

Common questions

Do I need a glass of water at every feed?

No universal rule applies. Keep fluids available if useful and follow thirst and your care team’s advice.

Will extra water increase milk supply?

This page does not promise that. Discuss supply concerns with a qualified lactation or healthcare professional.

Does 3.8 L mean plain water?

No. It is total water from foods and all beverages.
